AOI SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING CALLED | Added: 2009-06-24
1. A Special Meeting of the Aikido Organisation of Ireland has been called by the AOI Executive Board. This meeting will be held in occasion of the 13th Summer Course on Sat 04/07/2009 at 6pm in The Harp Tavern, Quay Street, Sligo. On the agenda the election of a new Executive Board for the remainder of the year. Members interested in running for election are asked to come forward as soon as possible contacting the Secretary. All 18+ members are invited to attend and vote for their preferred candidates. Those who will not attend may delegate another member to represent them at the meeting.

1. Starting from Wed 6th May Sligo Aikikai Aikido classes for adults will be on every Mon, Wed & Fri 7.30-9. Beginners training will resume in September. Any newcomers will be followed separetely during the above classes. All trainings will be led by Simone Chierchini Sensei, Assistant Instructors Andrzej Kowalczyk and Anita McGarry.

1. Tora-Kan Roma Dojo and Bracciano Aikido teacher Luca Mattei Sensei will be teaching this year's Spring Course alongside Simone Chierchini. Mattei Sensei is a former student of H. Hosokawa Sensei having started Aikido in 1976 in Roma's Aikikai Central School. Luca is well known for his no non-sense, aerobic approach to Aikido, his love for Guinness pints and a laugh, so get ready for a good time...
PROMOTIONAL COURSE 2009 | Added: 2009-02-16
1. The third edition of the Aikido Organisation of Ireland Promotional Course will be held on Sunday 22 March and hosted by the new AOI Dojo Raheen Wood Aikido Club. This Dojo is housed in the local Steiner National School, at Tumgraney , Co. Clare and it is open thanks to the efforts of Joseph Kennedy. Promotional Seminars (75% funded by the AOI) are held every year in a newly opened Aikido Dojo as a form of support of the development of Aikido in the area.
  The Promotional Course 2009 will be the occasion of the official return on the mats of our Head Instructor S. Chierchini after his knee...

ANNUAL BEGINNERS COURSE & KYU GRADING TEST | Added: 2008-10-23
1. This year's Annual Beginners Course will be held on Sat 13th Dec under the direction of S. Chierchini Sensei, AOI Head Instructor in Sligo, Sligo Aikido Club, Custom House Quay. The Course will focus primarily on improving Kokyu (breathing) Techniques, Taisabaki (Basic steps) and Ukemi (Breakfalls). Special attention will be dedicated to the fine-tuning of 6th Kyu Syllabus Techniques as well. The participants will also enjoy an introductory class to the art of Jo, the Japanese staff. The course is open to all levels and being designed for Beginners, doesn't require any particular skill.
12th ANNIVERSARY SEMINAR ORGANISED | Added: 2008-10-22

1. To facilitate for Roberto Foglietta Sensei's weekend course in Sligo, ATP2 will now take place on Sunday 19th October instead of Sun 12th as originally advertised. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
NEW BEGINNERS CLASSES AT THE SLIGO AIKIKAI | Added: 2008-09-14
1. New Beginnaers classes are now on at the Sligo Aikikai. These classes will be on-going during the whole training season under the guidance of the AOI Head Instructor Simone Chierchini 5th Dan Aikikai, the highest ranked Aikido teacher in Ireland outside Dublin. Schedule of classes: Adult Beginners: Mon & Wed 7.15-8.15pm. Boys age 5-9: Mon 6-7pm. Boys age 10-15: Wed 6-7pm. Girls age 5-15: Tue 6-7pm. All classes are held in the Sligo Aikido Club dojo, a traditional permanent Aikido dojo run according to the principles of the Japanese Budo.
PARIS - COURBEVOIE 2009 SEMINAR CONFIRMED | Added: 2008-09-09
1. Following the success of last year's Seminar held by Simone Chierchini Sensei in Paris, here we go again! Paris-Courbevoie 2009 will be on the 17-18 January 2009 weekend, with local teacher Philippe Duc Sensei plus a delegation of French students exchanging the visit on 31/01-01/02 in occasion of the 12th Anniversary Seminary in Sligo. Aer Lingus flights to Paris for that period are very cheap, so, PARIS PEOPLE! Why not?

Shihan Mutsuko Minegishi coming to St. Kevin's College | Added: 2008-03-13
1. On Wednesday 26th March, 7pm - 9pm, Mutsuko Minegishi Sensei will teach a class in St. Kevin's College in Dublin. A tempting prelude to Sensei's Sligo course for only 10 EUR!
  Directions to St. Kevin's: 121 bus from O'Connell St. gets you there in about 25 minutes. There are 2 entrances to St. Kevin's College on Clogher Road, one entrance on each side of Pearse College. Use the entrance to St. Kevin's which is nearest to the junction with Sundrive Rd., across the road from St. Bernadette's church. Push the buzzer on the right hand side of the front door, to be admitted.

New AOI Dojo in Co. Louth | Added: 2008-02-19
1. The AOI confirms itself as the main nationwide Aikido organisation of Ireland: we are pleased to announce the opening of a new AOI Dojo in Dundalk, Co. Louth. Training will be held by Lithuanian Aikido Coach Olegas Gajosinskas under the technical guidance of the AOI Head Instructor S. Chierchini. Good luck to Ole on his new Dundalk Aikido Club!

Sligo Aikikai go swiming | Added: 2007-10-17
1. This month fundraiser organized by the Sligo Aikikai consists of a Charity Sea Swim in Rosses Point, Co. Sligo where a group of Dojo members and sympathizers will brave the weather and throw themselves in the sea, with their suit on! The event will held on Sat 3rd November at 3.30. It will help raising funds towards the payment of the rent of the new Sligo Dojo. Sponsorship cards are available.

KIRIN - THE SLIGO AIKIKAI CHARITY SHOP | Added: 2007-10-17
1. At the beginning of August 2007 the Sligo Aikikai moved to its new permanent venue in Custom House Quay. In September it was decided to start the procedures to change its status to that of a charitable body. As part of our activities, we will be happy to provide the Sligo community with a new charity shop that we are going to call "Kirin".
Advanced Traning Program 2007/08 | Added: 2007-10-17
1. The 2007/08 Advanced Training Program will consist of 12 4-hour sessions, held on a monthly basis by Simone Chierchini Sensei, with the aim of forming the next generation of AOI Instructors and maintaining high standards of practice among the existing ones. Access to the program will be limited to AOI members ranked 4th Kyu and above only.
SLIGO AIKIKAI FINDS PERMANENT HOME | Added: 2007-10-17
1. A new permanent dojo will open in Sligo at the beginning of September, finally fulfilling the 11 year-long dream of many Aikido students from Sligo and the Aikido Organisation of Ireland. The new Sligo Aikikai dojo will be located in Custom House Quay, right in the city Centre, in the premises formerly known as Garys Cycles.

  As part of the Landscapes ?07 programme at The Dock, Carrick-On-Shannon, visual artist Gareth Kennedy has been commissioned to create a temporary public art work. A transparent cube structure will be sited on the banks of the river in Carrick-On-Shannon. The transparent cube will function as a steam-sauna.

1. The 2007 Promotional Aikido Course hosted by the Cavan Aikido Dojo on Sun 27 May 2007 was the first of its kind. Promotional Seminars are 75% Funded by the AOI and will be held every year in a newly opened Aikido Dojo as a form of support of the development of Aikido in the area.

1. An International Memorial Course in honor of Giorgio Veneri Sensei was held in Mantova, Italy over the 19/20 May Weekend. The Course was attended by over 150 students from Italy, Russia, Croatia, Japan, Czech Republic & Ireland and directed by Yoji Fujimoto Sensei 7th Dan. Ireland was represented by Sligo Aikikai K. Finn, A. McGarry & E. D. Sherry, accompanied by AOI Head Instructor S. Chierchini

TRAINING SYLLABUS DVD SHOOTING | Added: 2007-10-17
1. Work is under way to shoot, edit and produce the 1st Volume of the AOI Training Syllabus on DVD.
  This first volume will cover 6th, 5th & 4th Kyu syllabus techniques.
  The project is result of the collaboration of Stephen Clancy and Simone Chierchini.
  The final product should be ready in September at the beginning of next training year
CONGRATULATIONS TO LARA NATALI ON HER SAN-DAN PROMOTION | Added: 2007-10-17
1. On 28th April 2007 Sligo Aikikai & Carrick on Shannon Aikido Club instructor Lara Natali was promoted
  to San-Dan (3rd Dan),first in the Aikido Organization of Ireland history.
  Lara, a co-founder of the AOI, started Aikido at the age of 12 in Ferrara, Italy.
  Well done to Lara on her wonderful achievement.

1. A very enjoyable week of Aikido, tourism & fun: the 1st Lazio-Ireland Aikido Exchange resulted in a great
  success both in terms of training and social. The Spring Course connected to it was co-directed by
  Fabio Mongardini & Simone Chierchini Sensei in Sligo. A much enjoyed Demonstration was held on Saturday
  evening with every one in attendance involved.

1. Starting from January 2007 we are offering to all interested parties the opportunity to avail of a new
  Aikido Training Exchange Program. Under this scheme any meritorious student will be allowed to intensively
  study Aikido in the dojo of a Senior Teacher free of charge. Free accommodation will be also provided. This program is open to all members of the AOI.

  Simone reported that the training 2005-2006 was very successful for the AOI. It now has seven affiliated clubs,
  record membership, the cost of insurance has come down as a result and technical progress has been good.

1. Roberto Foglietta Sensei, an Italian native from the Adriatic town of Pesaro, started practicing Aikido
  in 1976 in Ezechiele Romagnoli's dojo, then a leading teacher of Aikido & Judo.
  Since July 1977 he started to follow Tada, Hosokawa & Nomoto Senseis and last but not least Fujimoto Sensei, who will become the most important referent of his Aikido formation.

  Organised jointly by the Aikido Organisation of Ireland and Judo Ireland, this innovative seminar was the first of its kind. A group of 30 Judo and Aikido students gathered in Longford's Temperance Hall for 2 sessions directed by Alan Martin 3rd Dan from Judo Ireland and Simone Chierchini 4th Dan from the Aikido Organisation of Ireland.
SPRING CLEAN 2005 "DUMP IT RIGHT" & TEENS COURSE 2 | Added: 2007-10-17
1. A busy day marked the 2005 "Dump it right" Spring Clean in Maugheraboy, Sligo, when around 30 children & parents dedicated their day to this event organised by the Rosewood Court Community Centre in conjunction with the Sligo Aikikai.

1. A newly designed Newsletter is available since the beginning of April for all the Aikido Organization of Ireland members and other interested parties. The AOI Newsletter, once a favorite of many Aikido students, was missing from the dojo desks since 2002. Next Issue will be due in August in time for the Benwiskin Summer Camp.

1. National Spring Clean encourages people from all walks of life to take pride in their local environment
  and to take action against litter.
  The Rosewood Court Community Group decided to join this honourable initiative and have a great go
  at all the rubbish that often makes the estate all too similar to a dumping site.

GIORGIO VENERI SENSEI PASSED AWAY | Added: 2007-10-17
1. Mr. Veneri 6th Dan, who has played an essential role in the formation of the AOI and visited Ireland in 1998, 1999 and 2000 to give exceptionally well received courses, passed away on 31st March 2005. The AOI, its officials, Head Instructor, Instructors and students wish to extend their most sincere condolences to Mr. Veneri's family and the Italian Aikikai.
